SafeJournalists, European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) and EFJ affiliates in Albania sent a Letter of concern regarding alleged threats to labour rights at ABC News Albania

SafeJournalists, European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) and EFJ affiliates in Albania sent a Letter of concern to ABC News Albania on May 24, 2025 regarding alleged threats to labour rights at ABC News Albania.

The SafeJournalists Network, together with the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), is closely following reports alleging unilateral and unannounced changes to employment contracts for journalists and media workers at ABC News Albania, specifically transitioning from regular employment contracts to freelance agreements.

Given the potential implications of such changes for job security, economic stability, and compliance with Albanian Labour Law and international labour standards, we respectfully request that ABC News provide clarification regarding the reported contractual changes and their legal basis.

In the letter, SJN and EFJ asked information regarding:

  1. The nature and extent of recent contractual changes at ABC News Albania.
  2. The procedures followed to implement these changes, including the prior consultation and notification given to affected employees.
  3. Steps taken to ensure compliance with Albanian Labour Code provisions and relevant Council of Europe standards.
