Mirko Šagolj has passed away. A journalist, editor, analyst, commentator, correspondent. Everything one could be and everything one could give to journalism.

Mirko Šagolj was born in 1941 in Konjic.

Until 1977, he was the head of the Bosnia and Herzegovina bureau of the Belgrade-based Večernje novosti, after which he joined the Sarajevo-based Oslobođenje, where he served as editor of the domestic affairs section, deputy editor-in-chief, deputy president of the Business Board of NIŠRO Oslobođenje, and correspondent from Moscow for all Oslobođenje editions.

He edited and laid out Oslobođenje on the front line during the siege of Sarajevo from 1992 to 1995. Together with his colleagues, he wrote and fought to ensure that the truth about Bosnia and Herzegovina was heard, and Oslobođenje was consequently named Newspaper of the Year in the World in 1992.

He was appointed editor-in-chief and responsible editor of Oslobođenje in 1999, and after four decades in journalism and more than 30 years at Oslobođenje, he retired in 2008.

His journalistic spirit, of course, would not let him rest, and even after retirement he continued to write analyses, and for many years also published in Start BiH magazine.
